Vladimír Birgus

Vladimír Birgus (born 1954) is Head and Professor of the Institute of Creative Photography at the Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic. He is the author and co-author of 25 books, including Tschechoslowakische Fotografie der Gegenwart (Museum Ludwig, Cologne / Braus, Heidelberg 1990), Czech Photography of the 1990s (Chicago Cultural Center and KANT, Prague 1998), Czech Photographic Avant-Garde 1918-1948 (KANT, Prague and Arnoldsche, Stuttgart 1999, The MIT Press, Cambridge and London 2002), Photography in Czech Lands 1839-1999 (Grada, Prague 1999), Photographer František Drtikol (KANT, Prague 2000), The Nude in Czech Photography (KANT, Prague 2001), Jaroslav Rössler – Czech Avant-Garde Photographer (The MIT Press, Cambridge and London 2003), Eugen Wiškovský (Prague, 2005). He has curated and co-curated number of exhibitions in many museums and galleries in Europe and the USA. With Jan Mlčoch is curator of the exhibition Tschechische Fotografie des 20. Jahrhunderts which is open at Kunst- und Ausstelungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Bonn until July 26, 2009. He has 55 personal exhibitions in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Pardubice, New York, Paris, Munich, Berlin, Salzburg, Vienna, Moscow, Kiew, Warsaw, Poznań, Wroclaw, Zagreb and other cities. His two monographs were published by KANT in Prague in 2003 and 2004.
