Gallery Sebastião Salgado Workers

For the year 2005, the gallery arranged a unique project of one of the best world photographers – Sebastião Salgado´s Workers. It is already the second Salgado´s project presented by the gallery. For the first time, it was the Exodus exhibition in Mánes in 2001, which was received with enthusiasm by the Czech public. In the Workers project, Salgado was capturing working people all around our planet for six years (the photographs come from 27 countries). The result is a profound sociological probe testifying of the transformations in breakdown of the work force in the present-day world. It is a tribute to the vanishing world of hard manual labour, to thousands of men and women who perform their work in the same way as for centuries past many generations before them did. Salgado´s highly aesthetic portrayal ends up in a panegyrical epic about people who fatalistically bear their lot without losing their self-esteem and hope. It is a testimony of human dignity. „These snapshots are history of one era. They are visual archeology of the time, in history known as the industrial revolution, time in which the men and women´s manual work was the centre of the world. The production structure and its effectivity vary, as also does, with them, the method of working. Highly industrialized world is racing fast forwards the future. That way the planet stays divided: the first world in the crisis from surplus, the third world in the crisis from insufficiency, and at the end of the century the second world – based on socialism – in ruins.
